London, England (March 10, 2010) - 24 7 parking, experts in finding affordable long term parking in London, comment of the publication of a manifesto calling for major political parties to tighten parking regulations so that charges and levies are applied legally and fairly.

Created by a coalition of motoring organisations, the Manifesto on the Reform of Parking and Traffic Enforcement has been created in an effort to highlight to mainstream political parties the growing feeling that local councils are only installing parking meters and painting yellow lines in local areas to raise funds for themselves - a practice that is actually illegal due to the 1984 Road Traffic Regulation Act.

The coalition feel that instead of parking meters being erected for traffic management and to relieve congestion problems in specific areas, they are instead being used to fill up council coffers which is highlighted through increased council profits, rises in the employment of traffic wardens and parking tickets, and out of proportion penalty fees and fines. They claim local businesses are being seriously affected and that councils are killing off the traditional town centre, whilst inadvertently increasing traffic pollution.

"The coalition have created this manifesto to essentially show mainstream political parties that the general public has had enough of obscene parking charges and what is viewed by many as unfair council money laundering," said Peter Cooper of 24 7 Parking. "It will be interesting to see how far they get with the manifesto as the major parties would probably prefer the current system to stay in place, especially with many of their constituents parking in London! If a major party where to adopt the manifesto and throw their weight behind it, it would certainly give them a huge political edge over their rivals and show they are serious about motorists' concerns."

London, England (March 19, 2010) - 24 7 parking, experts in finding affordable long term parking in London, comment on a recent survey undertaken by the University of Stuttgart which highlights London's public transport systems as some of the most expensive in Europe.

The survey, which places London's public transport only above Zagreb, Budapest and Ljubljana, claims that although journey times and connections between destinations in the capital are usually sound, London lets itself down massively with its high fares and overall expense. London was found to have the most expensive public transport out of all of the 23 cities included in the survey.

The damning statistic seems to suggest that London has some of the best public transport within the EU - if people can afford to ride it. Despite gaining kudos for the Oyster card scheme, the overall impression from industry bodies is that although billions of pounds are being pumped into London's public transport to make it more efficient and improve its general usability, fare prices will ultimately have to be reduced sooner or later. Also criticised was the disability access when accessing the tube, too few escalators and lifts and poor bike storage facilities on the transport itself.

"It's no secret that public transport in London is so expensive. A lot of people choose to leave their cars at home and use public transport due to the poor availability of spaces when parking in London," said Peter Cooper of 24 7 Parking. "There is a solution however for those fed up with paying high daily public transport rates and are looking to utilise their cars more effectively. At 24 7 Parking we can guarantee a London parking space when people contact us to use our services, no matter which London borough you're looking to park in."

London, England (February 19, 2010) - 24 7 parking, experts in finding affordable long term parking in London, comment on the news that independent tribunals are being set up to help motorists who are clamped on private land.

The tribunals will have the power to cover all areas of England, Wales and Northern Ireland and are part of amendments made to the Crime and Security Bill. The bill is currently going through parliament, and if successful, will mean that motorists will have the ability to challenge clamping fees levied through rogue clamping firms.

Clamping firms will have to ensure that signs are displayed with a minimum standard of visibility and their release fees will be capped - thought to be set at slightly more than the maximum local authority charge of £70. If overcharged, the firm will have to repay the excess amount. If successful at tribunal, motorists will be able to apply for compensation for incurred charges whilst the car was out of commission, such as taxi charges or vehicle hire.

"This is great news for motorists and we desperately hope the amendments to the bill succeed. Clamping firms have all too often acted like corrupt town sheriffs, taking parking law into their own hands," said Peter Cooper of 24 7 Parking. "Clamping is especially costly for people who are penalised for parking in London, and there are many areas where the law isn't clearly outlined and motorists get hit hard in the pocket as a result. The possibility of compensation for outside charges will make companies think twice before unfairly clamping a vehicle, and will hopefully help them to get their acts together."

London, England (January 29, 2010) - 24 7 parking, experts in finding affordable long term parking in London, report on the news that councils are exploiting a legal loophole whereby traffic wardens can fine motorists if they have more than one pay and display ticket on show in their car.

If a motorist has more than one visible pay and display parking ticket in their car then traffic wardens have the power to issue a fine of £70, or £120 if they live in the London area. A discount of 50% is available if the fine is paid within 14 days. The move has caused outrage amongst critics who underline earlier council promises that parking fines wouldn't be used as an income-generating measure.

The City of London Corporation's website reads: 'It is a requirement that only a single ticket is displayed. If more than one ticket is visible, the civil enforcement officer will issue a penalty charge notice and it is unlikely that we will withdraw it.' The clause appears under contravention number nine in the list of parking offences.

"This is a horrible showing of council exploitation and shows how thin their promise was when they said they wouldn't use parking fines for personal gain," said Peter Cooper of 24 7 Parking. "No offences are caused and motorists simply forget to remove old pay and display tickets once they have expired. Hopefully it is something that will be reviewed in the not-too-distant future, but for those who are worried about and unsure of the laws surrounding parking, they can contact us at 24 7 Parking to get advice on how we can offer them safe and secure, cheap parking in their area."

London, England (January 29, 2010) - 24 7 parking, experts in finding affordable long term parking in London, comment today on the news that local councils are demanding an increase in monetary penalties for parking fines to help them raise more money.

The British Parking Association is requesting talks with Transport Minister, Sadiq Khan, to review the current parking charges for councils outside of London. Away from the capital, there are currently two tiers of fine that can be issued to those who commit parking offences - a £40 fine for minor offences and a £70 for serious misdemeanours such as parking on double yellow lines.

260 councils outside of London currently have the power to control parking in their constituencies and keep the money raised through parking fines. They argue, however, that the £328 million raised last in 2009 wasn't enough to cover operating costs, and are looking at scrapping the minor offences charge band - meaning the minimum fine for a parking offence would be a staple £70.

"Councils have long used parking fines as a sneaky way to generate income and, sadly, it's looking like they're embracing the method to raise capital from the public in the long term," said Peter Cooper of 24 7 Parking. "It'll be interesting to see what Mr. Khan makes of the intended proposals and if the councils have any weight behind their argument. Luckily, 24 7 Parking can help people when it comes to looking for secure and cheap parking spaces in their area. It makes sense pre-booking your parking so as your money doesn't find its way into the pockets of local traffic wardens!"
