In the past, it would never have even occurred to you to look for foods that were low in carbohydrates. Carbs were widely used by bodybuilders and athletes to give them strength and endurance. If you were going to run in a race or play a game the next day, you would have eaten a meal full of carbohydrates. As high protein diets gained in popularity, however, carbs became the one thing athletes and dieters alike feared more than anything else. The idea that carbs are not good for you is now widely believed, though it's not accurate. While the general plan of eating a low carb diet is sound, some carbs are healthy and you shouldn't try to eliminate carbohydrates from your diet completely. Figuring out a good low carb diet takes a little planning, but it's not hard. Let's see how it works.

Vegetable based carbs are generally the healthiest. Compared to wheat and other gluten products, vegetables are significantly lower when it comes to carbohydrates. Remember this when you go to restaurants and order or choose items from a salad bar. A salad is always a good choice, and most restaurants have a few vegetarian dishes to choose from.

Vegetables are not really carbohydrate-free, but they are low in carbs and the carbohydrates contained within them are good for you. Carrots, cauliflower and broccoli especially are great tasting, filling and low carbohydrate snacks.

Don't forget about salads. You can either make or order a salad of any kind, or fill up your plate at a salad bar. The trick, however, to truly enjoying a salad is to choose a dressing that is healthy.

If you use lots of dressing that's high in fat and calories, you're undoing the benefits of eating all those greens. Try oil and vinegar with a little sea salt and pepper. You can research the many kinds of salads, and you can even invent new styles of your own; the same goes for dressings.

Low carb diets are popular with some people because they love meat and look forward to being able to eat more of it. While it is true you have more room in your diet for calories obtained from meat, you do need to watch what kind of meat you eat. Eating lots of hamburgers and bacon, for example, isn't the best thing for you. You want to stick to the fat free cuts of meat that you can get from the butcher. Seek out meats that come from natural sources, and low fat poultry is usually your best choice, and this can be prepared in many ways. Be careful about what you shovel into your mouth. It is not that difficult to consume less carbohydrates, because there are many ways. A low carb diet is pretty easy to start and stick with if the truth was known. Talk to a doctor or a qualified nutritionist when you first start on this road so that you can make sure you get a good and healthy start at a low carb lifestyle.
