Fire, aim, ready - Unfortunately this is the approach most of the new (and even some experienced) Internet based business owners and entrepreneurs take in their efforts. It's absolutely okay to feel enthusiastic and excited as you start to build your own business. Firstly, before you know it, those feelings will have faded and you'll be faced with the day to day grind of doing business. More importantly, if this is your first attempt at starting or running your own business, you're going to need to start at the very beginning. It is not really recommended you buy a college text book about marketing, either, as that is not needed. If you really want your business to be effective and efficient, it needs to be built from the bottom up.
Even if you are just beginning your IM journey, make a basic business and marketing plan. It doesn't matter if you've created a product of your own or are an affiliate marketer. Marketing plans are good ideas because they offer you clarity, direction and help you find your purpose. You need to figure out how you want to promote your product and then simply outline everything that you want to do. It should be enough to keep you busy for a whole year--document everything, set some timetables, milestones that you need to accomplish and goals that you want to reach. All of the big corporations do this because it is a fundamental part of doing incredibly serious business. You can use the principle of segmenting and apply it to email lists or any other form of marketing. You know that you can take your product market and segment it, and that is something we already talked about. When you segment anything, all you are doing is breaking it up into more groups, that's all. In the case of email marketing, you can segment lists for different reasons and according to different criteria. Once you have a grasp on the process, then your marketing and advertising will become much more effective. Once your messages are more highly refined to your audience, then you can reasonably expect higher conversions.
The majority of web marketers do too much talking and not enough listening, and that is a costly mistake.
They do talk, you know, and you need to find a way to listen in on them because you can turn that information into value that only you can give. Just a few places you can find your market are on forums and social media, or you can buy market research or research the relevant news items for your market. Comments being made on popular blogs in your market will keep you busy for a long time. That is just a small taste of what you can do to find out what your audience is talking about.
Do not think that usability is something that just arrived with the internet. For very many decades, marketing research has been aware of the effect a store's environment has on potential customers. This is such a wide area of study that entire businesses serve as consultants and perform market research on it. The larger the store budget, the more involved this area of usability becomes. So all that means you really should take this very seriously because it can help your business.
