There are a lot of ways that you can sell your car. some of them work really well while some do not work too well. The one that a lot of people appear to use when they are buying vehicles is car dealerships. The question is whether car dealerships are in fact required or not.
The one choice that you can make use of when you're either buying or selling a car would be to do so via classified ads. The problem is that, although you can ask whatever you want for the car and you can find vehicles which match both your liking and your price bracket, both the purchaser and the seller at risk. There is no guarantee the buyer will actually get the money and there's no guarantee that they buyer will get the vehicle as promised.
This is where car dealerships come in. they purchase the car from the seller for money and sell it to the purchaser. They take the risk the car isn't all it's supposed to be and that the customer will not pay for the vehicle. They take all the risk upon themselves. This is usually why you will get much less for your vehicle at car dealerships and pay a little more for the same car. they have to be compensated for that risk in some way or another and this is how they are doing it.
Obviously, car dealerships do have a tendency to be just a little picky about what cars they will buy and sell. Some will just buy a vehicle that's younger than a particular age or under a particular value or will only buy vehicles from a particular producer. Which means that if you have truly old vehicle you may have no choice but to sell your vehicle privately.
As you can see, car dealerships certainly have their place in the planet. They take a large amount of the risk out of selling and buying vehicles. In return for this they do charge more for the vehicles they sell and offer less for the vehicles they buy, but that's their prerogative.
