(12PressRelease.com) With nearly 900 million people worldwide without access to clean drinking water, and natural disasters cutting off drinking water from those who need it most, there is a tremendous need for better desalination technology according to GHF Group‘s resource analysts.

The world population continues to expand, yet only 3% of the planet‘s water is drinkable. Desalination is the process of removing salt and other minerals from seawater to make it potable. People have been doing his for centuries. The problem is that the traditional methods such as distillation and reverse osmosis require a massive infrastructure for large scale production of fresh water. It also consumes tremendous amounts of energy to operate, which is typically a scarcity where water is needed most.

Newer technologies are being developed every year with varied results. Modified vacuum distillation lowers the boiling point of the water, thus energy consumption. Other improvements are specially grown membranes for use in the reverse osmosis plants. Although these are valid improvements, they only reduce energy consumption by 5% to 15% in ideal conditions. The plants utilizing these newer technologies still need to be complex and costly.

This is where a company called Water Solutions Inc. has had a historical breakthrough. The California company is not an big R&D conglomerate, but an unassuming water treatment and disinfection service provider. It is their soon to be patented method of desalination may change the way the world cleans its water.

Using a deceivingly simple process, a unit that could fit in the back of a pickup truck can produce 18 times more fresh water per BTU over traditional methods. This greatly reduced rate of energy consumption makes it possible to utilize existing solar and wind power generation methods in remote locations, which is often where clean water is needed. Larger water volume needs can be addressed by assembling multiple units in parallel ´gangs‘ and drawing from a standard municipal electrical grid or battery power during emergencies.

This unique technology will have a profound impact on global desalination strategies. Licensing agreements are in place in four drought prone jurisdictions to date, with ongoing negations for 12 others due to close in the coming quarter.
