Psychologically, it's better to get a .com domain name than any other. Most people just assume a domain ends in .com, and are unlikely to remember any of the others. In a rare occasion, like delicio.us, it's okay to choose a country TLD, but only if it's going to be 100% memorable.
If you want to increase traffic to your website, you should first look at your content, and focus on improving it. Users aren't going to spend time at a site unless they can find the information they need, and improving your content is one of the easiest ways to drive-up traffic.
To make sure your entire website is indexed by Google, submit your sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools. A good sitemap should link to every page of your site, and listing your site map on Google will assure each of those pages is listed. This can take a few weeks, but yield great results in the long run.
Don't forget about all the tags in your HTML when inserting keywords! Name your files (CSS, images, etc.) with keywords, and use keywords in CSS tags (ID, class, etc.) Put the keywords in alt text, and in each headline you use to break up the content on your website.
Code your site for optimal search engine presence. This means avoiding both nested tables and frames. If you must include these in your page layout, be sure to offer an alternative option which is linked on each page. Search engine spiders have a difficult time indexing tables and frames, plus they make pages load more slowly for site visitors.
Get online users to "like" you by creating a fan page for your company through Facebook. Social networking can mean huge returns for the fully optimized site; fans of your page spread the word for you by sharing content on their walls and with friends, which entices hundreds or even thousands of unique visitors to visit your page as well as your actual website.
Make your font size 10pt or higher. In the past, webmasters have used very tiny font to hide keywords and code all over their pages to put them higher in search results. As a result of this, search engines now ignore sites that use very tiny text.
Include various images on your website so that you can take advantage of the visual searches on the big search engines. Sometimes, it is much better to display, promote or market your product with a picture, rather than explaining what it does with a text description. This will go a long way in improving your visibility as a company.
