Mayfair restaurants are typically considered to be the preserve of the fine-dining elite. Fine for high-flying city workers who are familiar with the culture and ritual of the fine dining experience, not so good for busy families. Easily bored children aren't welcome, so the notion goes. This is a misconception. There are many Mayfair restaurants which go out of their way to be child friendly - whether through the relaxed attitude of their staff and clientele, the funky atmosphere of their surroundings, or the tasty and unfussy food that they serve up.
Let's take a look at some of these Mayfair restaurants that welcome the whole family - make a note of these in your diary, and the next time you're in the W1 district with excitable kids in tow, you'll have a whole host of top-class restaurants that you know will make you all feel welcome:
Tibits - There'll be no waiting around in uncomfortable silence at Tibits, this vegetarian takeaway - unlike most Mayfair restaurants - specialises in fast food. This isn't a burger-based calorie party however, quite the opposite. It serves up exclusively healthy cuisine that is sure to get your taste buds going. If your young ones won't eat their greens in normal circumstances, you can be sure that they'll tuck in at Tibits - the food is expertly prepared and majestically moreish. If your kids aren't sure what they like, then you needn't worry. You pay for what you put on your plate by weight - not by item - so your kids are free to try bits and pieces until they find the food they like.
La Genova - This much-loved eatery is the oldest of all Italian Mayfair restaurants. It's a traditional restaurant, so your young ones will have to sit around and wait for their food - but the atmosphere is so friendly and welcoming that they won't mind for a minute. It's still run by its original owner, Mr Rinaldo Pierini, who prepares the restaurant's signature pesto sauce himself. Your kids will love the food, too - with plenty of tasty Italian dishes served up every day, La Genova is truly one of the most family-friendly restaurants.
Angus Steakhouse - Angus Steakhouses are a small chain of restaurants, dotted around London, which serve eye-poppingly huge steak dishes. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, and the staff speak - between them - more than 40 languages, so if English isn't your first language, you and your kids will be right at home. The W1 branches are a little further north than most Mayfair restaurants - the two Angus Steakhouse restaurants are situated on Woodstock Street and Argyll Street respectively, just to the north of Oxford Street. The steaks are, naturally, massive. However, if your kids can't handle the size of the meals, then there are plenty of options available for kid-sized stomachs, such as fish and chips, chicken skewers and starters to share. If you're into quality meat dishes and you want a break from the normal atmosphere of restaurants, then why not pay one of the Angus Steakhouses a visit?
