Teeth whitening procedures are the most popular treatments in cosmetic dentistry these days, however dental veneers and Lumineers follow close behind. Dental veneers are an ultra-thin porcelain shell that fits over the top of the tooth. They cover such flaws as discolorations, chips, gaps, cracks and minor misalignment. Your dentist will consider your dental health, personal preferences, lifestyle habits and overall appearance when considering whether traditional dental veneers or Lumineer veneers will be best for you.
Traditional dental veneers are porcelain laminate shells that are highly resilient and stain resistant. When dental veneers are cemented to your teeth, they create a strong, durable bond that can strengthen your teeth. If you and your dentist determine that you are a candidate for dental veneers, you will have a complete dental exam before your dentist prepares your teeth for the dental veneers.
In order for the veneers to sit comfortably in your mouth, some of the natural structure of your teeth, usually about half a millimeter, will need to be removed. Your dentist may then place temporary dental veneers to protect your prepared teeth while you wait for your permanent dental veneers. When your dental veneers are ready, you will return to have them fitted, checked for color and permanently bonded to your teeth.
Lumineers are a specific brand of porcelain veneers. They are as thin as contact lenses however still highly durable. They can be used to restore teeth that are stained, chipped or misaligned and can be used to improve the appearance of small or misshapen teeth. Where Lumineers differ from conventional dental veneers is in the application process. If you are a candidate for Lumineer veneers, your dentist will need to remove little or no natural tooth structure. This means that the process could be considered reversible if you need your dental veneers removed for any reason in the future.
Although you will typically need some type of anesthetic during the preparation and application of conventional veneers, Lumineers usually need none at all. Your dentist will usually just need to apply an etching liquid to roughen the enamel of your teeth before bonding the Lumineers to the surface, a process that is simple and painless.
Both Lumineer veneers and dental veneers can be used to cover stained or discolored dental fillings or restorations and to repair minor tooth imperfections, such as chips or cracks. Teeth that have worn enamel or that are stained can be instantly improved through the application of dental veneers or Lumineers.
To protect your Lumineers, brush them at least two times a day, and floss your teeth daily. You will need to see your dentist two times a year for a professional cleaning and complete dental exam. Avoid chewing on hard objects or very sticky foods or objects to reduce the risk of breaking or cracking your Lumineer veneers. If a Lumineer or dental veneer cracks or falls off, you will need to see your dentist.
