The hardest decision that any drug or alcohol addict may ever make is the decision to go into rehab. The second hardest decision may well likely be where to get that rehab.
Narconon, with an established drug and alcohol treatment facility located in Watsonville, CA, offers an all-inclusive long—term drug and alcohol rehabilitation program that is a far cry from the typical 12-step methods often used by other programs.
The results have been phenomenal, with a success rate of 76% reported among individuals who complete the entire Narconon program. This is in comparison to the more typical success rate of 2-3% found in more traditional 12-step and drug maintenance programs.
“Narconon is truly unique in many ways,†Mike Dipalma, CCDC, RASi at the Watsonville facility, explained. “For example, we‘re not a hospital, so we don‘t have to limit ourselves to standard Detox and rehab practices. Second, we charge a flat rate for our services. We realize that everyone requires a different amount of time to completely benefit from the Narconon program. So everybody pays one rate, regardless of whether they‘re here for three weeks or three months. “
It is the third difference; however, that has brought Narconon much praise and criticism: its sauna-based, guaranteed rehab system. DiPalma is quick to defend the method.
Drug relapses are caused by drug residues in the body,†DiPalma said. “They hide themselves in the muscle tissue, where they can remain dormant over the years. As time goes on, muscle cells die and are replaced by other cells. When this happens, the residues are released back into the system. The brain picks up on this and triggers the cravings again. That‘s when most people fall prey to relapse.â€
Sauna therapy, DiPalma says, literally sweats the residues out from the muscles through the pores. People treated in this method say their cravings during rehab rapidly disappear, to the point where they no longer crave drugs at all.
Narconon also puts its members on a strict vitamin therapy regimen. DiPalma said that drug addiction rids the body of many vitamins and minerals required in order to work properly. “Drugs replace this natural feeling with a phony high that ebbs and flows with every dose of drugs,†DiPalma said. “Vitamin therapy helps to bring the body back to its normal operating state.â€
But sweat and vitamin therapy are only part of the Narconon rehab program. A considerable amount of education is included, too education on handling addictions and handling life substance-free.
“Our attendees at Narconon are not patients,†DiPalma said, “They‘re students. Addicts are frequently people who simply didn‘t get learn all the life skills they needed in order to function in the real world. Our classes give these students the knowledge they need to handle virtually any problem that they may come up against out in the real world confidently and drug free.â€
While DiPalma would like to say that it‘s the addicts themselves who initially approach Narconon, the opposite is actually true.
“Our first contact is usually with the parents, spouses, grandparents and loved ones of the addict,†DiPalma said. “They read about Narconon and our incredible results. This usually gets the addict to think about treatment.â€
Perhaps the most surprising thing about Narconon treatment is that, as opposed to more common rehab methods like 12-step, the entire program is guaranteed to work. If a student completes the entire program-approved discharge plan and still has a relapse, that person is welcomed back to our facility for an additional 30 days at no extra cost.
“It‘s a tribute to the treatment that we rarely see someone return again after that,†DiPalma said.
The Narconon program was established to help people suffering from substance dependencies, with the goal of freeing them and their families from the devastation of drug or alcohol abuse. Narconon of Northern California opened its drug and alcohol rehabilitation program in 1992, in Bonny Doon, California. Launched by “word of mouth†publicity, ongoing success resulted in the relocation of the residential treatment program to a larger campus in Santa Cruz, CA. The Narconon treatment facility of Northern California program now graduates 150 clients annually. It includes a center in Placerville and a new center in South Lake Tahoe, CA.
