Pune, February 8th, 2010: A pioneering initiative to enhance employability for the youth was announced at Pune today by a Consortium comprising of Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), Global Talent Track (GTT) and Young Indians (Yi). This initiative will help lakhs of students to access quality oriented training aimed at employment in a variety of sectors. The program will run on blended learning format ensuring latest concepts and inputs are made available to students. The Employment Series being launched today is being piloted at the training centres in Pune and later will be expanded to other places in Maharashtra and rest of India.
On an average Asia recounts for 54 percent of unemployable youth population and India constitutes half of its percentage. Therefore, GTT and CII-Yi come together to share the common vision of helping the youth become employable. The three organizations have decided to partner to build a scalable and replicable model for supporting thousands of youth all over the country in their quest to become employable. Towards this objective, Pune and Kolhapur have been chosen as the first prototype centre where GTT will provide the know how, the content and its methodology for ensuring ´quality with scale‘. GTT will also make available its well researched multimedia content that can be accessed online, supported by workbooks and classroom partnering with CISCO.
In response to the initiative, Mr. Rajan Navani, Chairman, Mission on India@75, says, “India in order to achieve global leadership by 2022 has to train 500 million people creating a global workforce. According to ´India @ 75‘ initiative, this step is to impart education leveraging technology. And this initiative of using technology to provide employability will become a key next practice.â€
Dr. Uma Ganesh, CEO GTT says, “CII Yi GTT partnership will help in bringing in reality to the lives of lakhs of people in India who wish to make it big in their careers. Indian professional talent has been recognised world over and the reality is when it comes to skills, its track record has been far from satisfactory. The percentage of population amongst the youth that is single skilled is 96% in the case of Korea, 28% in the case of Mexico and 22% in the case of Botswana. India‘s skill base stands at just over 5% amongst the youth and that is a cause for concern., While GTT takes care of the delivery, CII-Yi will facilitate the placement process, co- certification and recruitment support.â€
The employability programs will be conducted using blended learning methodology which can run pan India and has low dependency on faculty would include classroom training, e-learning supported by a facilitator in the classroom, interactive virtual classroom through WebEx and workbook sessions to facilitate the learning. And for support, 4 prototype centres across Pune and Kolhapur are selected where these programs will be delivered.
Ms. Monika Trivedi, Chapter Chair- Young Indians (Yi), CII, Pune says CII‘s key initiative is to work with employability. The campaign we are launching with Global Talent Track for the rural population is very exciting. We have been trying to reach out to the corporates for an active participation in this unique initiative and I am very enthusiastic about the partnership with GTT for taking the first step towards this. If this pilot campaign works in these areas it will then be a pioneer in replicating the model across other areas.
