Hello- Global.com, a leading Japanese business development and marketing research company, is expanding its services in order to further support their global-minded clients around the world.

The new service can be found in the Japan Market Insight section on their homepage. It focuses on questionnaire surveys, using their consumer trend databank, to give current tendencies and consumption behaviors of Japanese consumers on various products and services, ranging from shoes, jeans, to hair salon services. Hello-Global.com hopes to provide both existing and potential clients with market information to support their business development in Japan and beyond.

One of the surveys focused on consumer behaviors and preferences in usage of convenience stores. The survey was taken on both Japanese men and women (50 in total) equally segregated between age and gender. Questions ranged from which convenience they visit the most to how many times they visit the convenience store(s).

Interestingly, the most popular convenience store was the world‘s number one convenience store, Seven-Eleven (46.3%), leaving the 2nd in the rank, Lawson (Japanese convenience store) way behind at 17%. Some of the free answers revealed that the reason why Seven-Eleven was preferred over the other were “They carry better tasting food and snacks”, “You can find the store anywhere”, etc.

With regards to the most frequently purchased item at the convenience stores, the no. 1 item turned out to be “Bread” with 72.0%, followed by “Lunch in lunchboxes” with 69.7% and “Confectionery” with 63.3%. The top three are all food items.

Hello-Global.com will be making future additions to these surveys over the course of the coming months. For this and more consumer trend data, view the link below

January 6th 2009,

Hello- Global.com, a leading Japanese business development and market insight company, is expanding its services in order to further support their global customers.

The new service can be found in the Japan Market Insight section on their homepage. It focuses on surveys, using their consumer trend databank, to give current tendencies of Japanese consumers surveyed on topics including shopping malls, jeans, tennis shoes and even wallets. Hello-Global.com hopes to provide both existing and potential clients with market information to assist in their business development growth.

One of the surveys focused on sports activities for both Japanese men and women (400 in total) equally segregated between age (20-59) and gender. Questions ranged from which sports they currently play, used to play and would like to play.

Interestingly, the most popular forms of sport for men and women were jogging and walking. For men in their twenties, futsal (football/soccer generally played indoors) was at the forefront. Due to the lack of space in Tokyo, some department stores have installed pitches on their roofs. Also skiing was popular for men in their forties.

With regards to sports they used to play, tennis and skiing were the most popular for women whilst baseball and soccer for men. For Japanese females, badminton was also high on their list. The sport which was most appealing to both men and women, for the future, was scuba-diving even for men in their fifties whereas swimming was more interesting for women of the same age group.

Hello-Global.com will be making future additions to these surveys over the course of the coming months. For this and more consumer trend data, view the link below

December 28th 2009,

Having analyzed the apparel fashion trends individually for Tokyo women in their teens, twenties and thirties, Hello-Global.com has now released the cross analysis report comparing the tendencies across these age groups. The 300 respondents were surveyed in the Tokyo metropolitan area to determine primarily what, where and how much they spend on their fashion.

Tokyo has recently undergone a dramatic change recently as the relatively inexpensive H & M, Forever21 and Uniqlo are now in as much demand as the expensive luxury brands. The analysis seems to highlight this change in shopping habits..

Some intriguing facts showed that teens and twentysomethings both preferred to shop in department stores (most notably Lumine, Marui and Parco) whilst thirtysomethings preferred online shopping (Rakuten). Across the board they all agreed that the No.1 resource for fashion trend information was fashion magazines, followed by television. The number one fashion brand in all three groups was Nolley‘s (Japanese fashion store). Although the women in twenties and thirties were similar in taste for overseas brands (Louis Vuitton and Coach), Forever21 topped the teen‘s list. One thing they all agreed on was their most recent favorite purchase which was the one-piece dress.

The key decision factor for making a purchase was design, price and then brand loyalty in all groups, with quality being not as important as these key factors. The most influential person on their purchase for teens and twentysomethings was friends and family but interestingly for thirtysomethings not only family but also TV stars made a difference for them.

October 6th 2009,

Known as the consumption leaders, Japanese women in their twenties carry the most sway when it comes to spending on the latest fashion apparel. This group of women traditionally made up of college students and office workers ( usually single) generally do not have to worry about screaming kids or demanding husbands and therefore have more disposable income.

100 respondents were surveyed in the Tokyo metropolitan area to ascertain the latest fashion tendencies and intriguing styles. Topics covered throughout the market insight included income, expenditure on fashion, favorite brands and personalities who influence their decision making.

73% of these women spent between $50 -$300(USD) per month on their fashion. Design was the key factor for them rather than price and they appear to be most influenced by friends or the shop staff when making the purchase. Fashion magazines were their preferred media outlet with 45% using this option compared to only 6% using TV and the internet.

The most popular non-Japanese brands were Coach and Louis Vuitton followed by Vivienne Westwood. Interestingly, the UK designer made it into the top 3 which was not the case in the previous two reports for women in their thirties and teens. Also, foreign handbags were most popular among this age group as 4 out of the top 5 were international brands which included Coach, Louis Vuitton, Miu Miu and Chanel. Miu Miu (the daily-oriented, younger clothing line from Prada) once again made an appearance as one of the most popular shoe brands coming 2nd to the Japanese maker, Pool Side. Amazingly, 97% of the women primarily shopped most frequently at stores (department stores, small boutiques or specialty stores) perhaps due to having more free time to indulge in life`s luxuries. 20% of the women also used online shopping.

Their favorite item was the summer (one piece) dress. The most popular fashion brand was Lowrys Farm (Japanese basic casual wear maker for young women) due to its design, comfort, affordability and cute style. The report highlighted the fact that not only do these women tend to spend more on fashion than other age groups but also they are clearly happy to spend on both the high-end designers as well as low-end ones.

September 28th 2009,

The latest market insight article from Hello-Global.com shows that the gaming fever is still a major crowd puller here in Tokyo. The Tokyo Game Show ran from September 24 to September 27th at the Makuhari Messe Exhibition Hall on the outskirts of Tokyo. As expected the crowds of gamers, geeks and thrill-seekers came from all quarters to attend the annual four day event.

In keeping with the eco-friendly approach, this year`s event used “green power” generated by a biomass power station. The major powerhouses of Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft were also displaying their latest technology.

The article highlights one the latest and most anticipated games called Dragon Quest for the Nintendo DS system. This provides one of the elements we should be seeing more of in the future. This game`s unique quality is based on sharing key items for the game through each players` gaming device (which can be obtained even by walking next to another player in the street). The television commercial for this game is also shown regularly on Japanese television. There was even a recent major gathering for fans of the game in Akihabara for the specific purpose of game sharing for Dragon Quest. Tokyo`s famous “Electric Town” in the heart of Tokyo which entices a vast amount of overseas visitors on a daily basis not only for games but also the latest in software and hardware technology.

Due to the downloadable i-Phone games which are becoming more popular, we are likely to see an increase in the downloading of gaming software from the internet onto game devices which is ultimately likely to generate big business for companies in Japan and overseas.

If you would like to read the complete article, see the below link. If you would like to learn more about the gaming industry in Japan, feel free to contact us directly

September 18th 2009,

Hello-Global.com (business concierge to foreign companies entering the Japan market) recently released the first in a series of market insight articles highlighting Japan.

The recent articles show the eco-friendly joint business ventures enfolding in Japan. Even in the current economic climate, companies want to expand into Japan but do not have access to the current updates, trends and systems in place in order to create a successful business in these shores. For instance, many foreign based companies are unaware of the strong support programs available though the Japanese government.

The economic powerhouses of Japan and the US with their new administrations in Hatoyama and Obama respectively have strong ties and it can be assumed these will certainly grow in future. Joint ventures seem to be increasing and one notable union between the two countries has come in the form of taxi industry in Japan.

A pilot program sponsored by the Japan Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), has brought Nihon Kotsu (Japan`s largest taxi company) and Better Place (US based electric car charging network developer) together to create the first car battery-switching stations in Tokyo. In a time when ecology is becoming more evident in our daily lives, it seems like a good move, especially when faced with the long lines of taxis polluting the streets of Tokyo.

Another article noted that joint ventures with the high success rates are the vendors who unite advanced technology/engineering with local Japanese manufacturing companies. One successful partnership is between Nohmi-Bosai Ltd. (Japanese provider of fire protection systems) and Swagelok (American fluid systems technology firm) who have created an environmentally sensitive cooling system known as “Dry Mist”.

It is clear that there is a strong potential for joint ventures in Japan with these new government organization programs in place and we should see many more of these partnerships developing over the coming years.

August 25th 2009

We may be still recovering from the biggest economic crisis of our generation but it would appear Japanese women are still looking for the latest must-have fashion item. Hello-Global.com, which provides market insight and tailor-made consulting services to foreign affiliated companies entering Japan, recently performed a survey showing the latest fashion trends for women in their thirties. As one of the leading luxury brand consumers in Asia this vibrant city is hot-bed of the latest world fashion.

One hundred respondents took part in the survey based in the Tokyo metropolitan area.　Not surprisingly the most popular non-Japanese brand was Louis Vuitton, whilst Coach remained the leading handbag brand. 42% of those surveyed had a household income ranging from 4 to 8 million yen annually (approx.USD $40K to $80K). More than half of those surveyed spent between 5,000 to 10,000 yen (approx. $50 - $100) per month on fashion items. Although, not quite at the level of the Japanese boom during the eighties, there is a clear sign of continuous spending on their part.
http://hello-global.com/fashion_report_30s

The most intriguing fact was that 70% of the women preferred to shop for their fashion apparel online. This shows a clear sign that women are prepared to make purchases without trying on or even seeing their garments. Department stores were the second choice for shopping with 59%.This selective age group showed that design not price was the key factor.

Their fashion trends are influenced predominantly by fashion magazines, television and the internet. They are swayed to make their purchase by family members, TV personalities and friends. “Summer” dresses, “tunics” (not to be confused with those worn by Julius Caesar and his soldiers but the modern day summer garment), t-shirts and skirts carry the most appeal.
