From September 2001, the style of number plates in the United Kingdom changed to include two letters (the local memory tags), two numbers to indicate the year of registration which are age identifiers, and three other chosen letters for the random element.

This will change from March 2010 where the new age identifier will be '10', and will change to '60' from September 2010. The identifier will change to '11' from March 2011 and to '61' six months later. The DVLA say they are going to continue using this method until all possible avenues with it are exhausted.
